Presently What The most ideal approaches to catch up after the systems administration eventWhen you go to a systems administration occasion, regardless of whether a gathering, course or business-club meeting, your work has quite recently started. It's the follow up after the occasion that can truly deliver profits for you. This incorporates exchanging data that is significant to one another over email and increasing expanded associations from a solitary contact. I talked with Shama Hyder, leader of Click To Client, LLC, a full-administration web based advertising firm, about the benefit of systems administration occasions and how to make them increasingly important for you as a vocation seeker.Hyder, who was named one of the 10 Most Powerful and Influential Women in Social Media in Ron Hudson's Immediate Influence blog, proposed explicit follow-up exercises to get more profit for your venture from future systems administration occasions. Such a large number of individuals leave organizing occasions feeling better yet sitting idle, she said. Rather, take only one of the accompanying conclusive actions:1. Acquaint two individuals with each other. Hyder said that one of her partners, Jim Penny, is an ace at this since he discovers one individual at every occasion and acquaints him with another person Penny believes that individual should know. As per Hyder, where those two individuals take the relationship is up to them, however Penny is constantly recognized as the person who made the presentation! You can do this, too.2. No later than 24 hours after the fact, send an email. Try not to hold up until the following day or the following week. Odds are you won't get around to it, and regardless of whether you do, the beneficiary may not remember what your identity is. Hyder proposed that you send an email to everybody you took a card from. Regardless of whether you don't see a prompt association, simply state thanks.3. Get in touch with one PRP (Potential Referral Partner). For Hyder, a PRP might be somebody to whom she can send business or somebody whose customers her firm can help. The best PRPs are the individuals who can make sense of a success win situation. The same applies to your pursuit of employment. On account of occupation trackers, search out one PRP at each systems administration occasion with whom to share work leads and assets. Probably the most ideal approaches to develop both a business and a system is by teaming up with others. Joint endeavors can be incredibly ground-breaking, Hyder said. At whatever point she arranges, she attempts to search out one referral partner.4. Make notes on your encounters. Hyder included that at whatever point she comes back from occasions, her brain is turning with new thoughts. In the event that she doesn't record them, they get lost. Visual cue thoughts, or keep in touch with them over your whiteboard. Simply get them down!5. Check your Web webpage. On the off chance that you have a Web webpage, ensure it's functioning admirably and the connections are dynamic. On the off chance that you met many individuals, odds are some will look at your Web website. Ensure that it is modern and a decent portrayal of who you are.6. Thank the host, if appropriate. What Happened After Zappos Got Rid of Its Managers

What Happened After Zappos Got Rid of Its Managers Who hasn't imagined about an occupation where you come in and accomplish your work with no one breathing down your neck or setting expectations? Sounds essentially like the perfect gigâ€"then again, actually practically speaking, it's not generally so natural to clear away the pecking order that has characterized work for, goodness, hundreds of years (plus or minus). That is the thing that the people at Zappos.com discovered when they occupied with an aspiring examination to yank down the company pecking order at the Amazon-claimed retail site. Named holacracy and advocated by CEO Tony Hsieh, the thought was that layers of the executives were smothering advancement. It's essentially the brilliant guideline of internet retailing, however applied in a working environment setting: Get free of the go betweens for better outcomes. Many individuals in the association, including myself, felt like there were an ever increasing number of layers of administration, Hsieh told the New York Times in an article about the trial, which began in 2013 and was going all out two or after three years. (In any event, thinking outside the box, it appears, requires some investment.) As portrayed in the article, the organization was wrestling with some prickly issues. First off, without a chain of importance, how would you set compensation? Without any titles and no advancements, on what grounds would you be able to request a raise? Without formal frameworks for acknowledgment and prizes, a few representatives got hesitant to take on additional work. And keeping in mind that you may think you'd be progressively gainful on the off chance that you didn't need to answer messages and send consistent updates to your supervisor about the status of activities, think about this: The thought behind holocracy isn't so much that you're not responsible to anyoneâ€"it's that you're responsible to everyone. With the goal that implies gatherings. Loads of gatherings. The Times chronicled workdays loaded up with roundtable social occasions that were brimming with connecting with correspondence yet left a few laborers feeling overpowered and crushed for time to complete their genuine occupations. A week ago, in a follow-up to its underlying article, the Times took a gander at Zappos again to perceive how it was functioning through the new supervisor free worldview. It's turning out to be progressively evident that holocracy isn't for everybody. Through the span of generally the previous 10 months, about 20% of Zappos' workers have left the organization. In some work gatherings, for example, one vital group connected on a major tech framework relocation, about 40% had stopped. That doesn't imply that there aren't different representatives who think not having a chief in the customary sense naturally makes their gig a fantasy work. Be that as it may, Zappos declined to address the issue with the Times in its subsequent article, which portrayed the loss of ability as another blow to the extreme thought of a manager less work environment.

Millennials Abandon Facebook. What It Means for Social Recruiting - Workology

Millennials Abandon Facebook. What It Means for Social Recruiting - Workology Facebooks Faults in Recruiting, Sourcing Hiring Join us on Thursday, June 13th at 11 AM CST for a free webinar as we discuss Beyond Facebook: How to Recruit  Millennials  Online. Learn about social media usage, engagement and internet recruiting best practices across the globe.  Register here.   Social media is a great resource to engage, interact and source for job seekers who are spending time online. Like most marketing thats happening online, the ROI can be hard to define. Bosses who sign checks and manage budgets tend to be skeptical of the benefits of social media because its often soft and intangible but so is relationship sales and networking events. Its just a new way of building connections thats happening online. Facebook, in particular offers a great way to engage a targeted group of candidates or prospects for as little as $10 a day. You can target language, location and their interests either through sponsored posts, ads or suggested to pages to like. No other online resource offers such micro and specific options that can provide results and insights literally overnight. With a pay per click campaign on Google to be effective, we have to wait weeks or months to see the benefits and sometimes for thousands of dollars a month. Facebooks Faults in Recruiting, Sourcing Hiring Unfortunately, Facebooks Graph Search still makes sourcing and internet searching bulky. It stinks, and I still cant even search my own profile for updates, photos and  information  Yet, I am on Facebook multiple times a day. Maintaining a Facebook Fan Page is expensive and requires a constant commitment in sharing, updating and commenting unless you are a big brand. Facebook, as an individual is one of my favorite tools to engage, ask questions and connect with business professionals, friends and family. As an individual, I share family announcements and information like you see below. Im also not a Millennial. As a mom, I shared an exciting first time moment in my 4 1/2 year old daughters life. She jumped off the diving board in swimming lessons, and I felt compelled to share. For the Millennial, this is likely too much while Xers and Boomers like me dont give a damn. Facebook serves as the glue that connects a family and friends together online. Updates, announcements and sharing exactly like this is whats driving Millennials away from the leading social networking site, Facebook.com. Its because, the parents (like me) are policing, patrolling and using Facebook to connect with their friends. Thats so not cool so theyre logging out and spending their time online somewhere else. The question in where? The numbers support the Millennial migration away from Facebook. You see below that 36% of Facebooks population (which is in stark  comparison  to 72% of 18-34 year olds in 2008) can be considered  Millennials. Facebook is no longer cool anymore because its also no longer fun. Mom is there poking her nose up in your business and maintaining multiple profiles of yourself is a hard job. Moms judging you and following your every move. For fans of Facebook its a lot like gaming. Its fun. Theres thrill and a need and desire to obtain rewards in the form of  likes, mentions, comments, and pokes. Think of it as your virtual award wall like the ribbons and medals you had as a kid. This recognition demonstrates to the world, youre important, connected and engaged until you dont really care any more. The game grows old. Thats precisely the point where we are with  Millennials  who are  disengaged  on Facebook only logging in once every seven days instead of multiple times a day. Millennials Dont Do Facebook I think my intern, Sarah said it best to me when discussing Facebook. I dont really do Facebook. I connect with you to get to know you and to provide me my phone information. Otherwise, Im not there. The question is how do we engage this technology savvy audience of job seekers in a way that works for them? Learn more about where Millennials are spending time online at our webinar on 6/13 at 11 AM at our webinar: Beyond Facebook: How to Recruit  Millennials  Online. Register here.

Thats where AWS CodeCommit comes into the picture. Providing a secure and fully managed service, it has proved to boost an organizations performance in various aspects.Topics Covered:Introduction to AWS CodeCommitAWS CodeCommit vs GitHubAWS CodeCommit WorkflowCase Study: How Edmunds.com Reduced Administration Maintainance Time by 95%Demo: Create A Repository In CodeCommit And Explore Its FeaturesIntroduction To AWS CodeCommitAWS CodeCommit is a source c ontrol storage and version code service provided by Amazon. It helps the team with better code management and collaboration, exploiting the benefits of CI/CD. It eliminates the need for a third party version control. This service can be used to store assets such as documents, source code, and binary files. It also helps you manage these assets. Managing includes scaling, integrating, merging, pushing and pulling code changes. Lets have a better look at services provided by CodeCommit:Fully Managed Service:If youre a DevOps engineer, wouldnt you like to keep your entire focus on production instead of maintaining updates, managing your own hardware or software? AWS CodeCommit eliminates the boring tasks of managing your resources providing high service availability and durability.Store Code Securely:Since its a version control system, it stores your code. For a matter of fact, it stores any kind of data, be it documents or binary files. Data stored is pretty secure as theyre encrypted at rest as well as in transit.Work Collaboratively With Code:AWS CodeCommit lets you collaboratively work with the code. You can work on a section of the code and the other person/team can work on the other section, the changes/updates can be pushed and merged in the repository. Users can review, comment on each others code helping them write code to their highest potential.Highly Scalable:AWS CodeCommit lets you scale up or down to meet your needs. The service can handle large repositories, a large number of files with large branches and lengthy commit histories.Integration:You can easily integrate AWS CodeCommit with other AWS services. It keeps these services close to other resources making it easier and faster to fetch and use increasing the speed and frequency of development life cycle. It also lets you integrate third-party services pretty easily.Migration:You can easily Migrate any Git-based repository to CodeCommit easily.Interactions Using Git:Interacting with CodeCommit i s pretty simple as its Git-based. You can use Git Commands to pull, push, merge or perform other actions. It also gives you the feature to use AWS CLI commands along with its very own APIs.Cross-Account Access:CodeCommit lets you cross-link two different AWS accounts making it easier to share repositories between two accounts securely. There are a few things to keep in mind like you shouldnt share your ssh keys or AWS credentials.Introduction to AWS CodeCommit | AWS Certified DevOps Engineer TrainingThis video will give you an introduction to the version control system like pushing, pulling, merging, and committing code using AWS DevOps Service CodeCommit.AWS CodeCommit vs GitHubGitHub is also one of the version control systems. Lets first look at the similarities between GitHub and CodeCommit.CodeCommit and GitHub use Git repositories. Both of them support code review. They can be integrated with AWS CodeBuild. Both of them use two methods of authentications, SSH and HTTPS.Lets now h ave a look at the differences between them.Security: Git is administered using GitHub users while CodeCommit uses AWSs IAM Roles and users. This makes it highly secure. Using IAM roles lets you share your repositories with only specific people while letting you limit their access to the repository. For example, few users can view the repository, few people can make edits, etc. CodeCommit lets you have a third step authentication using MFA.Hosting: Git is like home for GitHub but not when used with AWS. Hence when GitHub is used with AWS, its like a third-party tool. Whereas, CodeCommit is hosted on AWS and managed by AWS, making integrations with CodeBuild and its usage much simpler.User Interface: GitHub is fully featured and has a really nice UI. Whereas CodeCommit user interface is pretty average.AWS CodeCommit WorkflowHave a look at the below flow diagram to understand the workflow of CodeCommit. It consists of three parts Development Machine, AWS CLI/CodeCommit Console, AWS Co deCommit Service. You can use the AWS CLI or AWS CodeCommit Console to create a repository(remote) which will be reflected onto your AWS CodeCommit Service to start off with your project.Do a git clone from your development machine, a git clone request will be received at the CodeCommit service end. This will end up syncing the remote repository created in step 1 and the local repository that was just cloned.Use the local repository on the development machine to modify the code. Run git add to stage the modified files locally, git commit to commit the files locally and git push to push the modified changes to CodeCommit. This will, in turn, modify the remote repository.Download changes or modifications that are done by other team members working on the same repository using git pull. Update the remote repository and send those updates to your development machine to keep the local repository updated.Case StudyLets have a look at a case study to point out my views better.About the comp any:Im going to talk about this company called Edmunds.com. Its an online website/app that lets buyers browse cars, view photos, videos, etc about cars that are out for sale.Challenges:Previously used on-premises SCM had a few issues as mentioned below:Adding new users to the SCM was difficultSCM has a huge operational burdenDifficult and time-consuming to manage and maintain hardware and softwareRepositories lacked backupRepositories lacked clustering capabilitiesService would suffer from downtimeAWS CodeCommit to the rescue:Edmunds.com started using AWSs CodeCommit after researching about many other services. They migrated more than 1,000 repositories and more than 270 users to AWS. CodeCommit handles hosting, maintenance, backup and scaling for the company.Fully managed: The company has experienced about 95 percent reduction in the time spent on administration and maintenance.Highly Available: Made git repositories highly available by using Amazons S3 to store the backup across d ifferent Availability Zones.Code Efficient: Company is saving across $450 per user manually.Flexible: Using Amazons CodeCommit made their website to be easily scalable in terms of the number of users making it very flexible.Demo: Create a Repository In CodeCommit And Explore Its FeaturesIn this section, Ill demonstrate the creation of a repository on CodeCommit, create a branch, commit changes, view the changes and merge repositories. Lets have a look.Step 1: Go to your AWS login page and log into your AWS account. If you do not have an account, proceed by creating a free account. Once you log-in, you should see a page as shown below:Search for CodeCommit and click on that service. Further, click on Create Repository to create a repository.Youll be prompted to add your Repository Name and Description. Add those and click on Create. You should get a success message as I got. There are two ways of connecting your repository SSH and HTTPS. In this case, Ill be using HTTPS. Now that a re pository has been created, go ahead and create files in the repository. When you create a repository, its always empty. Youll have to create and add files. Get inside the repository that youve created and click on Create file.Once youve created the file. Go ahead and add code to the file. Now that youve written your code, you need to commit these changes. Add Filename, Author name, Email ID, Commit message and click on Commit Changes. Now when you navigate to the Repository section by clicking on Repository, you should see your repository there.Go ahead and click on your repository, you should see the file that you just created. What are branches and why are they usedNow that youve created a repository, a file and added the code into the file, lets learn how to create branches. Do you guys know why branches are used? In a Dev or Prod environment, you are not the only one working on these repositories. There are going to be other people working on different sections of the same reposito ry. Different people working on the same file can get confusing. Its better to use branches in such situations. Branches are basically copies of the original file which can be allocated to different people. They can make changes, commit them and push it to CodeCommit. After certain tests when these codes are verified, they can be merged with the master branch. In the next section, Ill explain how to create branches, edit branches, view and compare changes, view commit history and how to merge these branches with the master branch.Step 2: To create branches, click on Branches on the extreme right. And then click on Create branch on the extreme right top corner as shown below:Add branch name and description and click on Create branch. You should see something similar to this:Once you click on the branch, youll see that it contains all the files that exist on your master branch.Lets go ahead and make changes to this branch. Click on the file ec2.txt.Click on Editas highlighted below.Make the changes as you wish and commit these changes by adding the Author name, Email Address, Commit message. Go ahead and click on Commit changes. You should get a success message as I got.Now that you have a master branch and another branch which is a little different than the master branch, lets compare them to look for differences. Click on Create Pull Request.Select the master branch as youre comparing the current branch with the master branch. Click on Compare. This highlights all the differences in the master and the other branch. You can also check the commit history. Just click on Commits, next to changes.Step 3: Suppose you agree with the changes made in this branch and youd like to reflect these changes to your master branch, you can merge the two branches. Add Title and Description. And click on Create. You get a success pull request notification.Click on Merge to finally merge the two branches. This brings us to the end of AWS CodeCommit blog. You can integrate this service with various DevOps tools and can make the building process easier. I hope this blog was helpful. Unlimited Vacations

Unlimited Vacations Unlimited vacation time . . . a new trend in the workplace. It’s an interesting time to be discussing this topic. Two weeks ago, I spoke with KUT about a Right Management survey that indicated that 70% of individuals did not use all of their vacation time in 2011. Why is Vacation Time Going Unused? Some individuals felt pressure (internal or external) to make sure they showed their commitment to work by taking less vacation days. Other individuals are allowed to rollover vacation days each year and might have been saving some days for 2012 when they will need extended vacation (honeymoon, maternity leave). Some individuals are awarded compensatory time for hours worked after 40 hours each week and used the compensatory time rather than vacation. Some individuals just don’t take a lot of vacation. They are wired to work more and vacation less. Whatever the reason may be, I would expect people to take less vacation time when unemployment is high. Another topic that we spoke about was whether individuals who did take days off really took a break from the job. Many individuals take time off and leave the office but are still plugged into the office through email or phone. They may call into meetings or answer emails while they are trying to relax. This, at times, defeats the purpose of vacation. Vacation is to truly relax and give individuals time away from work to become re-energized about their work. Is this a function of internal pressures (i.e. we want to be seen as a productive employee and worry about disconnecting from work), or external pressures (i.e. our boss never takes a true vacation and expects the same behavior from her employees), or a function of technology (i.e. we have the ability to work from anywhere so we do)? It can be one or more depending on the individual and the situation. Will Unlimited Vacation Policies Work? I love the idea. It is logical: each individual has different needs and can make vacation decisions based on their needs. On LinkedIn I saw an article speaking on the benefits of unlimited vacation days. An individual might not put off taking a vacation (even though she could really use it) for fear that she will run out of days if something comes up. Most individuals are aware of and can manage the work they need to accomplish each day and what they are responsible for. Unlimited vacation can be a very motivating factor for individuals who realize more control at work. It will work better for some companies than others and will be highly dependent on the company’s culture. You might think that people will hardly come to work if they have unlimited vacation. In some cases, maybe, but the opposite problem is more likely. Thus, the company must ensure that employees are encouraged to take vacation time and make it clear that this is not a policy designed to make people take less vacation. For employees, this will be a shift from the traditional workplace. The workplace is ever-changing with flexible hours, telecommuting, technological advances, increase in independent contractors, etc. I am eager to see how the policy plays out as more and more employers implement it. Please comment below with how you use your vacation days and what you like (or dont) about unlimited vacation.

Wearing Your Battery on Your Sleeve

Wearing Your Battery on Your Sleeve Wearing Your Battery on Your Sleeve Wearing Your Battery on Your Sleeve An as of late created printed, battery-powered battery surely isnt a similar sort that pink rabbit from TV depends on. This wearable battery extends and flexes like elastic. Nanoengineers at the University of California, San Diego, built up the battery, which, they guarantee, is the first of its sort because of its stretchiness. The zinc batteries have a bunch of employments, fueling everything from wearable sensors to sunlight based cells and wearable hardware, says Joseph Wang, seat of the nanoengineering division at the college. This is a noteworthy advance toward self-fueled stretchable gadgets, he says. Materials that can be worn and that fuse batteries can screen ailments, power gadgets, track sports execution, or be utilized in manners not yet thought of. In the clinical field, patients with ceaseless conditions, for example, diabetes or constant obstructive aspiratory ailment could wear a wearable observing gadget to make them aware of an adjustment in their wellbeing that needs clinical consideration, for instance. Or on the other hand, for the climbing aficionado, the hardware could control knapsacks in the outside and help with open air route by being connected to a GPS framework. Stretchable batteries imprinted on texture are driving a green LED light found in this image. Picture: UC San Diego Yet, questions remain. How, for instance, can the batteries that power wearables be extended, flexed, washed, and worn and still work without separating? The appropriate response, says Wang, is the hyper-versatile polymer material produced using isopreneone of the principle fixings in rubberand polystyrene, a tar like segment. The substance, known as SIS, permits the battery-powered batteries his group created to stretch to twice their size, toward any path, without being harmed. The specialists added bismuth oxide to the batteries zinc terminals to make them battery-powered, he includes. The ink used to print the batteries is made of zinc silver oxide blended in with SIS. The batteries can be printed legitimately on texture or on materials that permit wearables to cling to the skin. They additionally can be printed as a strip to control a gadget that needs more vitality. The batteries can be worn for significant stretches, Wang says. His groups model battery just has around one-fifth the limit of a battery-powered portable amplifier battery, yet its only one-tenth as thick, is less expensive and made of economically accessible materials. Two of the battery-powered batteries could control a three-volt light-transmitting diode (LED), Wang says. The scientists utilized standard screen-printing procedures to make the batteries, a strategy, they state, that drives down expenses. Wang says average materials for one battery cost around 50 pennies while a similar, financially accessible battery-powered battery costs around $5. From Money to Sports

From Money to Sports Success Story > From: Job To: Job From Money to Sports “I would rather all that effort was going into a job that was aiming to improve society.” * From Money to Sports David Tinnion's gut was telling him it was time to move on. Here's how he learned to listen, and how, with the help of a social enterprise programme, he's moved into work that gives something back. What work were you doing previously? I used to be a client relationship manager in the investment management industry. What are you doing now? I'm the COO of a youth sports charity that works right across London. Why did you change? I was working pretty hard in my old job and over time I came to the conclusion that I would rather all that effort was going into a job that was aiming to improve society. It was as simple as that. When was the moment you decided to make the change? There was no one moment â€" it was a gut feeling that grew over time. After a couple of years, it became obvious that it was time to act on that feeling. Are you happy with the change? Yes. My new job has been quite challenging since I started six months ago, but I haven't really missed my old role at all. What do you miss and what don't you miss? I miss some of my old colleagues who were great to work with. And, very occasionally, some of the creature comforts of corporate life. But it's pretty rare for me to even think about my old job. How did you go about making the shift? I had decided it was time to change course but I knew I wouldn't dedicate the time needed to figuring out what my new path should be while I was working full time in my old job. I was lucky to have had the chance to take redundancy; I went for it, using the time and space that gave me to try to think about what should come next. I looked at quite a few different options: teaching and the civil service, in particular. But during my research I came across the idea of social enterprise and, specifically, the On Purpose Associate Programme. This promised the chance to do two six-month placements working in socially motivated organisations, with lots of personal development training on the side. It seemed like a great way to further explore and clarify my own interests, while gaining practical experience of working in organisations with social objectives at their heart. I applied, felt very lucky to be accepted, and started On Purpose a couple of years ago. What didn't go well? What 'wrong turns' did you take? There were some tricky times in the few months between leaving my old job and starting at On Purpose. Lining up meetings and introductions to learn more about teaching and the Civil Service seemed a slow process. At one point I flirted with taking a job I'd been offered in consultancy â€" it would have been a great job but it was definitely not the reason I'd left my old post! Luckily, having taken the decision to leave my old role seemed to make it easier to listen to my inner voice that said this wasn't the right next step for me. How did you handle your finances to make your change possible? I had some savings to fall back on and my redundancy payment made life easier for the first few months until I started On Purpose. I'd talked things through carefully with my wife before leaving my old role, so we both knew where we would stand financially. Starting at On Purpose got me earning again. What was the most difficult thing about changing? Just getting started. After that, working out how to find a new direction quickly became my new reality. What help did you get? I made sure I let as many people as I could know that I was looking for something new â€" friends, family, old colleagues, etc. They really helped with suggestions and setting up introductions. The year with On Purpose was a massive help â€" the other Associates doing the programme with me were a brilliant group and I learnt a huge amount from them. The programme also provided a lot of support and resources for personal development, which helped me better understand myself and where I wanted to take my career. It was a fantastic year of transition. What have you learnt in the process? I think the key lesson was that it is right and reasonable to have high aspirations for my career. I don't need to settle for something just because it's familiar. I've also moved away from the idea that there is a 'perfect job' out there, which takes the pressure off in a lot of ways. In future, I plan to try and focus more on the experiences and learning I can take from each job I do. What would you advise others to do in the same situation? Try to save a little bit before making a change, if you can. I found having a buffer made the whole process a lot less stressful than it might have been. And make sure family and friends understand why you need to make a change, as being able to lean on them through the process is a big help. To find out more about On Purposevisit www.onpurpose. uk.com. What lessons could you take from David's story to use in your own career change? Let us know in the comments below.

On the Job by Anita Bruzzese 5 Ways to Successfully Join a New Team

On the Job by Anita Bruzzese 5 Ways to Successfully Join a New Team It can be very exciting to join a new team. But it also can be a bit daunting when you realize the successful track record of that team. How can you make your mark? How can you get others to listen to your ideas? What if they don't like you or what you have to say? These are pretty normal questions, so don't feel like you're the only one who has ever felt this way. In fact, it's probably a good thing to be concerned with how others may feel about you because it shows that you're ready to be tuned into others and won't be a know-it-all that others may immediately dislike. At the same time, your ideas are valuable. You would not have been asked to join the team if others didn't feel that way, so don't be shy about speaking up when you have something to contribute. Here are some way to smoothly join a new team: 1. Listen. The only way to fully understand the team members and their goals is to spend time asking questions and gathering information. Once you have a better picture of how the team functions, then you can contribute more effectively. For example, it doesn't make sense for you to jump in on Day 1 to suggest recreating a process or product that failed earlier. 2. Widen your circle. Just talking to the current team members isn't enough -- you need to get the bigger picture of how things get done. Talk to support staff and outside partners (as long as you get permission to do so), who can provide a more complete picture of needs and concerns. 3. Leverage your strengths. You don't have to make a huge splash from the beginning. But you can also start making a difference pretty quickly if you know your strengths and begin using them to help the team. Help various team members understand your strengths and vice versa. When you combine your strengths with someone else's, the impact can be seen right away. 4. Curtail your ego. You didn't get put on this team because you're a mediocre employee. You were invited to join the team because people felt you had something critical to offer. Still, that doesn't mean you're going to be hailed as a hero from the first day. More than likely, one or two other team members will feel they need to knock you down a peg or two. If you stay focused on how to achieve results, you'll soon earn respect from everyone as a professional who is more concerned with quality work than gaining recognition. 5. Find ways to connect.Invite team members out for coffee or join them after work at the local pub. Those connections are just as important as the ones you make inside the company walls and will make it easier for other team members to accept you.

10 Employer Branding Strategies to Become the Employer of Choice - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

10 Employer Branding Strategies to Become the Employer of Choice - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career I havent spoken enough about employer branding on this blog, yet it deserves some attention. I look at employer branding as the place where marketing and HR meet head on. Today, I want to give you 10 strategies that you can start using to brand your business as a great place to work. Ill use some of the latest projects going on at EMC to illustrate this for you. If youre wondering how this relates to personal branding, its the HR tentacle in the Octopus Model of Relevancy. As we, personal brands, are trying to position ourselves as worthy for corporations, they are in fact playing the same game. Disclaimer: I help EMC with their social media and branding efforts. 1. Employer branding group I think its everyones job at a company to get involved with branding and social media, but at the largest companies, there should be a group dedicated to it (who owns the brand). EMC has one of these groups and they are charged with furthering the attraction and commitment of Talent to EMC as a place to work. Part of that is making EMC a fun place to work at! 2. EMC Visual Talk Radio In order to market your employer brand to the outside world, it helps to spread awareness and enthusiasm from within. This is of course much easier when you have around 40,000 employees and although an average of 150 turn into our radio show, they are able to tell more EMCers and spread the message. EMC also has an internal social network with over 8,000 employees, who contribute to an endless pool of knowledge and can share comments after each radio show. A Calendar of Cool wiki is used to highlight upcoming events and there are about 600 replays of the shows to date. There have been seven radio shows so far, and weve had special guests, including some of EMCs well-known bloggers, such as Steve Todd and Mark Twomey, who is branded as StorageZilla to his peers. The point of the radio show is to build community (to help make this large company feel small, like family) by highlighitng interesting people and thier passions which reflect some of the cool, compelling and challening happenings at EMC. By building community and connecting them with interesting happenings at EMC, we are at the same time engaging the people with the company strategy. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjGHMzPVYdY] Subscribe to my podcast series 3. Employee testimonial podcasts What better way for someone to learn more about what its like to work at a company than to have podcasts videos of currently employees. Each employee has a few minutes to describe their EMC story and share it with any and all viewers. The podcasts are important because they give people a look at a company from the eyes of people who live their job each and every day. The podcasts are stored on YouTube of course. 4. Employment branding blog Polly Pearson is the Vice President of Employment Brand and Strategy Engagement at EMC. Shes also a good friend of mine and I help support many of her initiatives that are named in this post. Her blog posts probably give the best glimpse on the culture of the company, from someone who has been with the company forever (were talking when the companys stock price was over 100!). Her posts are, not surprisingly, are all in support of EMC, BUT she does find time to admit mistakes and issues that have occurred in the past. I dont know any other Fortune 500 HR executives who blog. Do you? Other EMC bloggers can be found on our community page. 5. Visual identity (branding) Branding is never complete without some cool imagery. The below image is going to be the next generation of EMCs employer brand. Isnt it awesome!? Im probably biased because of the You^2 on the upper right corner. From my perspective, it means that you are apart of EMC and that you have the power to help build EMCs brand with your own brand. Its a very powerful message and I hope more companies start focusing on building a brand people take pride in. You can see the start of this branding effort on the main careers section and one of the big ideas is to use younger people photographed to appeal to that generation. 6. Facebook page EMC is currently working on a Facebook page for the entire company. Ive already learned a lot about the process and its not as simple as it may appear. Anyone can create their own page, but a sponsored page is quite expensive and tedious. Basically it costs between $10 and $30K to have your own page with a few custom applications and then to get a unique url, such that Facebook.com/corporatename, it costs at least $50K of advertising money (Facebook social ads). The investment is well worth it because there are over 120 million people on Facebook and you can segment the audience quite easily. The companies that do this well right now are Dell and Verizon. 7. Twitter careers This is another project we are currently working on. The idea is that there are over three million Twitter users and a portion of that are looking for jobs. What better way to observe the latest jobs and apply for them then hearing about them using the tool that you are already using? You can contact a few of EMCs HR superstars, such as Gina Minks, Polly Pearson, Paul Henneke, and Barbara Massa. 8. Virtual world recruiting EMC first entered Second Life in August of 2007. On October 25, 2007, EMC held its first career fair in Second Life. EMC recruiters and hiring managers conducted a virtual career fair in this 3D online environment. Selected candidates could interview online for EMC positions in marketing, technology and sales. The result was that we recruited two new hires, a developer with a key IT skill set and a financial controller. In terms of PR, the event was covered by NPR, among many other mainstream channels. 9. Job podcasting I dont know about you, but Id rather listen and visualize a job opening rather than using a job board. EMC recently experimented with job podcasting, which allows the hiring manager to actually talk about the job opening. The hiring manager can bring the job to life and paint the picture in the perspective job applicants mind. I think this is a very effective way of selling a hard-to-fill job opening and a more personal approach. 10. Sex appeal and humor Mozy, an EMC Company, just filmed a series of commercials, using iJustine as a spokeswoman for their online backup product. Dave Robinson, Mozys VP of Marketing, led this effort and did an excellent job. The commercials are geared to the general public and they are very funny. iJustine has some great sex appeal and since shes also in the tech geek tribe, it works out very well for trying to mass-market this project.

Tips for Writing a UW Madison Resume

Tips for Writing a UW Madison ResumeUW Madison is known as one of the premier science and engineering research universities in the United States. In order to stay ahead of the competition, you will need to give your resume an extra boost. The following strategies can help you increase your chances of being accepted for a job at UW Madison. Most resumes nowadays are reviewed based on the writer's current position. If your resume includes a position that is more than two years old, you may not get accepted. Although it may seem like a hassle, it is actually a good idea to use a resume with an appropriate date.Keep in mind that most employers appreciate fresh and recent educational achievements. Resumes should be updated every year and should focus on current achievements. You should not include any achievements that have already been made. All achievements must be relevant to the position you are applying for.Another mistake that people make when writing a resume is choosing a non-relev ant position when they should pick the most relevant to their current work situation. You should choose the position that is the best fit for your current career goal. A position that does not match the requirements of your career should be eliminated. The goal is to get a position that is directly related to the position you are applying for. Most graduates from UW Madison graduate school programs choose a sub-field of science and engineering as their area of expertise. The position that you fill should have a direct link to your field of study. You will be less likely to get hired if you fill a position that does not directly help you solve a problem in your career. A situation where a job that directly relates to the main course of study would be a good fit would be when you are filling a position in the department of a related course. When applying for graduate school positions, you should always look for jobs that are directly related to your curriculum and provide solid academic credentials. This helps your application to stand out from the rest of the applicants. However, your education degree alone should not be the only factor that would get you a job. Your personal characteristics, personality, experience, and skills are all equally important.Skills are also an important part of your resume. You should only put skills in your position description, if they are relevant to the position you are applying for. For example, if you are applying for a marketing position, you should focus on your marketing or sales skills. This will help you stand out in the crowd of applicants who are applying for the same position.Writing UW Madison resumes is a lot of work, but it is definitely worth it. By following these tips, you will be well on your way to getting hired at UW Madison.
